Transit runs 1 to 3 days for in-state and neighboring moves and 3 to 7 days for most out-of-state lanes, with coast-to-coast moves taking 5 to 8 days, as our car shipping transit times guide explains.
Total timeline from booking runs 1 to 3 days for carrier dispatch on top of transit, so plan 3 to 11 days door to door depending on the distance you are shipping.
Open transport is the most affordable option out of North Carolina and books fastest, which is why most customers choose open car shipping.
Book 2 to 3 weeks ahead and avoid the spring and summer peak, since timing your shipment is the cheapest lever you control.
New residents have 60 days to title and register a vehicle, sooner if they take a job here, per the North Carolina DMV.
Emissions testing applies in 19 counties, including Mecklenburg, Wake, Guilford, and Forsyth, under the NCDMV inspection rules.
The primary carrier highways serving the state are I-40, I-85, I-95, and I-77, which is why door-to-door service works well in the Piedmont and takes longer in the mountains.
Carrier insurance minimums are $1,000,000 liability and $100,000 cargo on every load, explained further in our auto transport insurance guide.
Key Things to Know About Shipping a Car from North Carolina
How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car from
North Carolina?
Most North Carolina car shipping runs between $350 and $1,900 on an open carrier, and where your car shipment lands inside that range depends on distance, vehicle size, and the time of year you book. A short regional run like Charlotte to Atlanta sits at the bottom of that spread, while a coast-to-coast move out of Raleigh sits at the top. The table below shows real route data rather than a guess, so you can see what your lane actually costs before you speak to a coordinator. Larger vehicles add roughly $100 to $200 to these figures, and flexible delivery dates almost always price lower than a fixed calendar date.

Open vs. Enclosed Transport Costs for North Carolina Car Shipping
Choosing between an open or enclosed trailer is the first decision that moves the number. Open car shipping is the most common transport method in the country and the most affordable option on every lane above. Open auto transport puts your vehicle on a multi-level car carrier alongside eight or nine others, which spreads the cost of the run across the whole load. Enclosed car shipping costs roughly 50% more because an enclosed trailer shields the car from weather and road hazards, which is why classic cars, antique cars, and high-value vehicles usually travel that way.
North Carolina sits on four heavily used carrier highways: I-95 along the coastal plain, I-40 from Wilmington through Raleigh and Asheville, I-85 through Durham, Greensboro, and Charlotte, and I-77 running north out of Charlotte. Carrier availability is strongest in those corridors and thinner in the far west and on the Outer Banks. Spring and summer pricing runs above fall and winter, so shipping vehicles in October or November usually saves money.
Our Fixed Price Promise on Every North Carolina Auto Transport Quote
The Fixed Price Promise is what separates a real quote from a teaser rate. Some car shipping companies quote low, collect a deposit, then come back days later asking for more because no driver would take the load at that price. Our number holds, and the detail behind how it is built is covered in our guide to what drives car shipping costs.
"The price we quote you is going to be the price we charge you when it comes to shipping your vehicle."

Trusted Nationwide North Carolina Vehicle Shipping
Licensed, Insured, and Vetted North Carolina Car Shipping Companies
The best car shipping company for your move is the one that can prove what it claims. Every auto transport company you consider should be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and you can confirm our active USDOT and MC authority in seconds. We have been BBB accredited for years and have spent more than 17 years moving vehicles for families, dealers, and military personnel. Online reviews tell you the rest, and comparing the top car shipping companies on verified reviews is worth an hour before you hand any shipping company a deposit.
Verifying insurance coverage matters just as much as licensing. All licensed carriers must provide liability and cargo coverage, and the truck drivers in our network carry a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance before a single vehicle is loaded. That insurance coverage does not extend to pre-existing damage, which is why the vehicle inspection at pickup matters so much. Our coordinators answer 24 hours a day, our verified customer reviews are public, and the Fixed Price Promise holds on every North Carolina auto transport booking.
Know Your Trucker and In-House Claims
On pickup day, our Know Your Trucker program sends you a text message with a link showing the assigned driver’s license and photo information, plus confirmation of the equipment arriving for your vehicle pickup. Claims are never outsourced, so if something goes wrong, our own in-house team handles it, and our guide to auto transport insurance explains exactly how coverage applies.
How North Carolina Car Shipping Works
Three steps take you from a quote on your screen to a car in your new driveway, and the whole process is laid out in our how car shipping works walkthrough.
Step 01: Request Your Quote
Enter your pickup and delivery locations, vehicle details, and preferred transport date, and an instant quote comes back in under a minute. Vehicle type matters here, since larger vehicles take more deck space than a sedan. Booking 2 to 3 weeks in advance improves both pricing and scheduling flexibility, and flexible pickup dates can lower shipping costs further.
Step 02: Schedule Pickup and Vehicle Inspection
The Bill of Lading is the legal document that records your vehicle’s condition at pickup and delivery, and it’s also the document your insurance claim depends on. You and the driver walk the car together and note every existing scratch, dent, and mark before anyone signs. Never sign a blank Bill of Lading. Clean your vehicle first so existing damage is visible, and photograph all four sides and the roof, as our car transport requirements checklist sets out.
Step 03: Transport, Tracking and Vehicle Delivery
Your vehicle moves along I-40, I-85, I-95, or I-77 depending on the lane, and carriers average 400 to 500 miles per day once loaded. The driver calls 2 to 4 hours before arrival so nobody sits waiting at a North Carolina delivery address. Carriers may have difficulty accessing tight residential streets, in which case the driver arranges one of the nearby drop-off locations instead. At vehicle delivery, you inspect the car and note any damage on the Bill of Lading before you sign, and our transit times guide covers what affects your delivery dates.
North Carolina Car Shipping for Military PCS Moves
North Carolina carries one of the heaviest military footprints in the country, and PCS orders rarely arrive with generous notice. Fort Bragg sits just west of Fayetteville and supports tens of thousands of soldiers and their families. Camp Lejeune at Jacksonville, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base at Goldsboro, and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point add thousands more moves a year.
If your report date is fixed and your household goods pickup is already scheduled, expedited shipping uses team driving to compress the timeline and get the car carrier moving sooner. Discounts are available for military personnel and students, and our military PCS shipping page covers orders documentation and timing. Families juggling two vehicles and a base housing date find the detail in our military car shipping benefits guide useful.
Research Triangle and Charlotte Corporate Relocation
The second wave of North Carolina shipping demand comes from work. Charlotte is the headquarters city for Bank of America and Truist, and the Research Triangle around Raleigh, Durham, and Cary anchors the state’s technology and biotech employers. Add Duke, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State University, and every August brings a fresh round of students shipping cars to campus.
"We stay with our customer throughout the entire transport. You'll generally have an individual agent who's there to assist you throughout the whole process, and we're committed to full transparency."
Marco Maggiore, CSO, ShipYourCarNow
Corporate moves usually come with a deadline and a relocation budget to account for, which our corporate relocation car shipping service is built around. Parents sending a car to campus can compare timing and cost in our college student car shipping guide.
Why Ship a Car To or From North Carolina
North Carolina's Population Trends
North Carolina is the country’s leading destination for people moving between states. Between July 2024 and July 2025, the state gained a net 84,000 residents from other states, the largest net domestic migration gain of any state, pushing the population to 11.2 million. Those arrivals come from New York, New Jersey, Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio in large numbers, which is why so many of our inbound bookings run down I-77 and I-95.
Who Is Moving to North Carolina
The pull is a mix of jobs and cost of living. Banking and fintech draw people to Charlotte, pharmaceutical and software work draws them to the Triangle, and furniture, textiles, and logistics still employ heavily around High Point and Greensboro. Shorter inbound moves from Virginia, West Virginia, and Tennessee price well below the coastal and cross-country lanes. Retirees come for the coast and for the Blue Ridge Mountains around Asheville and Boone, where the driving is beautiful, and the winter is milder than anything north of the Mason-Dixon line. North Carolina’s geography also influences shipping costs and timelines. Major urban areas typically have better shipping rates because carriers pass through constantly, while mountain towns and Outer Banks addresses take longer to schedule. If you are weighing the drive against a carrier, our ship or drive comparison does the math honestly.
North Carolina Vehicle Registration and Driver Requirements
Registration Deadline
New residents have 60 days from establishing permanent residence to title and register a vehicle, according to the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles, the agency within the North Carolina Department of Transportation that handles motor vehicles. You must register sooner if you accept gainful employment in the state or when the reciprocity agreement with your former state expires, usually around 30 days, whichever comes first. You also need your North Carolina license before you can title the vehicle.
Emissions Testing Requirements
Vehicles registered in 19 North Carolina counties must pass an emissions inspection alongside the annual safety inspection, per the NCDMV emissions and safety inspection rules. Mecklenburg, Wake, Guilford, Durham, Forsyth, and Buncombe are among them. New residents are exempt from an initial inspection but must have one before the first registration renewal.
Title Transfer Fee
A North Carolina certificate of title costs $66.75 under the NCDMV fee schedule, and private passenger registration is $46.25 a year. North Carolina charges a one-time 3% highway use tax instead of sales tax whenever a title transfers, which matters if you bought the car out of state.
Insurance Requirements
North Carolina raised its minimum liability limits to $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $50,000 for property damage, for policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025, according to the North Carolina Department of Insurance. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is now included at matching limits. This is your own coverage and sits separate from the cargo insurance your carrier provides.
Driver's License Transfer Deadline
New North Carolina residents have 60 days to get a North Carolina driver’s license, per the NCDMV guidance for people moving to the state. Bring proof of identity, your Social Security number, proof of your North Carolina address, and proof of liability insurance. Book the appointment early, because slots at busy offices go quickly.

Todd Carlisle did a great job of arranging the transport of our car. This was our first time shipping a vehicle. He explained the process thoroughly and was always available to answer questions. He is friendly, knowledgeable and professional. A neighbor recommended them and had shipped their car multiple times. We look forward to working with Todd in the future.Posted on Google![]()

Outstanding Service and Experience! Wanted to thank and recommend Jason Woesnner and the ShipYourCarNow Customer Service team for the outstanding service they provided on two shipments each way across the US over a 2 week period. The last delivery was tricky as we had a health issue with a member of our family that required us to cancel and reinstate a shipment within a 10 hour period of time over the past weekend. Jason worked the lines double time to make happen and the weekend CS team coordinated details with the carrier. Communications between all parties beyond expectation. Overall, It was a success with a delivery time of less than 3 days - FL to CA. This is your team that makes things happen! Happy holidays - Doug GPosted on Google![]()
